RWF SPOTLIGHT: THE KING OF STRONG & STABLE STYLE
Legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock once said "The more successful the villain, the more successful the picture" and in the realms of wrestling I can't think of a better example of this than Spike Trivet in Riptide.
From the early days of the promotion Spike quickly became the most hated man in the building, mixing his questionable political beliefs with his penchant for hiring mercenaries to do his dirty work. His obsession with crushing all in his path, in particular Jack Sexsmith, has become one of the central narratives told across the Riptide catalogue so far.
Of course our goal here at RWF is to find out a little bit more about the person behind the persona, and with the Brighton Championship Tournament fast approaching - where Spike will be gunning for that title - what better time to catch up with most people's third favourite member of Money vs Everybody!
RWF: As one of the fastest-rising heels on the British Wrestling scene many people will be familiar with your work, but how would you describe yourself and your style to someone new to the world of wrestling?
First of all thanks for saying that. It means a lot that anyone would think that of me. Both in the ring and on the mic I would describe both as 'antagonistic'. I think whenever Spike is in fight mode he's simply trying to get under your skin in order to throw you off your game. And if that doesn't work it's any means necessary.
RWF: What made you decide to become a wrestler, and what was the first step you took on that path?
Because it's awesome. I've always been mesmerised by the characters and the showmanship of it all. I was working as an actor and I found the industry very difficult to penetrate despite my best effort and I just felt this childhood dream coming alive again and I thought 'Why not?'. This way I'm performing every weekend and always getting paid. Literally googled a school, payed a deposit so I couldn't chicken out and went.
RWF: Not going to beat around the bush here, the Riptide fans detest you inside the ring, but there is a level of respect and appreciation outside. Is there anything in particular that you look forward to about coming down to Brighton or performing in front of the Riptide crowd?
I think that Riptide has been a tremendous platform for me. They've really given me a forum to show people the things I can do and say. I kind of look at the Riptide fans as the first real 'Trivet haters'. I think beforehand people didn't like me, but the Rippy fans pushed it to a new level and as a result pushed me to a new level. The energy they give me is incredible and I love to give it right back. I don't think my career would be anything close to what it is without Riptide.
RWF: What are your ambitions and goals going forward, whether it be in the near or distant future?
My goals really just consist of:
- Get better
- Wrestle as much as I can
- Keep learning
- Try to make this a full time thing
RWF: If you could give one piece of advice - whether it be to aspiring wrestlers, people in the industry already, or even the fans – what would you say?
Be open to your short comings. Bear in mind things change, personally or professionally and you need to be able to roll with it. Be respectful to others and the business in equal measure. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. If you ask for feedback and then don't take it don't expect it again. Smile. Couldn't think of just one, sorry.
